FAQ - Living Wage at The Establishment

We’re all about beer, but more than ever, the rising cost of living is high on people’s minds. Since we

announced our membership in the Alberta Living Wage Network, we’ve received many questions about

the process and concept. In the interest of maintaining transparency and encouraging others to consider

exploring similar options, we want to continue the conversation.

“How is compensation tracked and calculated to reach the Living Wage standard”

The ALWN works with each organization to confirm that the compensation for each employee meets

Living Wage requirements. For some types of compensation, like tips or commission, compensation

values are recorded over a period of time to ensure that the average compensation achieves the regional

Living Wage.

“How do gratuities contribute to the living wage calculation?”

For applicable roles, tips form a part of compensation packages under the ALWN Living Wage guidelines.

We are required to ensure that fluctuations in gratuities do not result in an average overall compensation

below Living Wage.

“How long has The Establishment been paying a living wage?”

We started observing Living Wage guidelines in late 2021. Doing so aligns with the values of our business,

and we believe it contributes to a positive and productive work environment. In August 2023, we

completed the process to be formally recognized through the Living Wage Network.

“Who determines what the living wage is?”

The ALWN determines what Living Wage is for each region, based on the cost of living in that area. The

ALWN is made up of community organizations and municipalities with the goal of advancing a

coordinated living wage movement in Alberta.

“What happens if Living Wage goes up?”

Generally, the ALWN updates the Living Wage calculations every November and the member

organizations then have 6 months to adjust their compensation accordingly. If unable or unwilling to do

so, their membership and recognition is removed.
