Bright, bubbly, and popping with cherries, this funky riff on a Belgian Kriek is a little sweeter and more complex than last year’s beer by the same name. This year we swapped a third of the sour cherries for sweet ones and arrived somewhere beautifully reminiscent of spiced cherry pie and amaretto. As with last year’s spin on a Belgian Kriek, we used Lambic-inspired beers for the base and refermented the lot of it on loads of whole cherries for a real long time—hence the hue.
Besides the fruit flux, another twist in this iteration was in favour (and flavour!) of using more mature mixed culture beers as a base. As a result, it’s got lower acidity and more balance than its precursor. Sip the two fraternal twins side by side and let us know what differences you’re able to discern.
✏️ Pairs well with a quiver of Tide-to-go pens

MEET THE LABEL ARTIST: Słavek Pytraczyk
Słavek Pytraczyk is a Polish-born artist based in Calgary, Canada, whose work explores themes of urban decay and abandonment. Through the layering of multiple images, he highlights the often-overlooked beauty of neglected spaces and structures. By blurring the lines between different artistic disciplines, Pytraczyk creates a distinct visual language that challenges traditional boundaries. His incorporation of factual, imaginative and symbolic elements further deepens the narrative and invites viewers to question their perception of reality.
THE INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind my design, Cherry Coloured Funk, stemmed from my exploration of various structures scattered throughout Calgary. At the heart of this artwork lies an abandoned mid-century house, which serves as a focal point and reflects my fascination with forgotten architecture. Symbolically, a small candle-like flame emerges from the chimney, signifying that while the structure has vanished, its essence remains. Drawing formal inspiration from the Cocteau Twins' artwork for their single "Cherry Coloured Funk," I incorporated a dynamic, wave-like shape on the left side, rising above the house. On the right, I integrated balloon-like forms, derived from documented installations at The Platform in Calgary. These forms, slightly abstracted, lend the piece an uplifting quality with undulating lines that contrast the house's straight, geometric edges. Additionally, I added a touch of "digital dust" above the chimney, enhancing the piece's overall sense of playfulness and funkiness.
